Gum treatment

Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong smile. If you notice redness, swelling, bleeding when you brush, or gums pulling back from the teeth, we assess what is going on, explain it plainly, and treat gum disease before it progresses — with deep cleaning, hygiene coaching, and a plan that fits children, teens, and adults.

What gum treatment includes

We look at the gums and bone support around your teeth, remove plaque and tartar below the gum line when needed, and give you practical steps to use at home. Further treatment is quoted in writing — we do not add steps you have not agreed to.

Gum assessment

We check for redness, swelling, bleeding pockets, and recession. X-rays when they show bone loss or change what we recommend.

Deep clean

Scale and polish above and below the gum line where bacteria hide. For heavier build-up we may spread care over more than one visit.

Understanding gums

Signs, stages, and what we do

Gum disease often starts quietly — bleeding when you brush, bad breath, or gums that look puffy or pulled back. Caught early, professional cleaning and better home care can stop it progressing. Left alone, it can lead to loose teeth and more complex treatment. We explain where you are on that path and what will help.

Early signs to watch for

Bleeding when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, gums that look red or puffy, or teeth that feel longer as gums recede. Children and teens can show these signs too — not only adults.

Mention any of this when you book so we allow enough time for a proper gum check, not just a quick polish.

What gum disease is

Plaque bacteria irritate the gums and, over time, can damage the bone that holds teeth in place. Gingivitis is the early stage — often reversible with professional cleaning and better daily care.

Periodontitis is more advanced and needs closer monitoring and sometimes more than one deep-cleaning visit. We explain which stage you are in and what that means for recall timing.

Deep cleaning and maintenance

We remove tartar above and below the gum line where brushing cannot reach. Heavier build-up may need a second visit or shorter maintenance appointments until gums settle.

Your care plan includes how often to return and what to do at home. If a tooth needs repair, we quote fillings or refer for specialist care when that is the better option.

Children and family care

Bleeding gums in children often link to plaque around new molars or braces. We coach brushing in plain language and pace the visit for their age — parents stay in the room.

Families can book gum care and a child's check up on separate appointments so each visit gets the right time and focus.

Do not ignore bleeding gums

Bleeding is a signal, not something to brush harder through or wait out. Early gum treatment stops progression, protects the bone around your teeth, and keeps future treatment smaller.

Book a consultation if gums bleed, look inflamed, or have not been checked in a long while. We explain before we treat, quote in writing when further work is needed, and itemise care for health fund claims.

The process

How you get this done

From booking to your home-care plan — how a gum treatment visit usually runs at Fresh Smile, whether this is your first gum-focused appointment or a follow-up after bleeding or recession.

  1. Book

Online or by phone. Say if gums bleed, feel sore, or it has been a long gap — we allow time for a proper assessment.

  2. Assess

History, gum exam, and x-rays when needed. We show you what we see and explain the stage of gum disease in plain language.

  3. Treat

Deep clean to remove plaque and tartar. We go at a pace you can manage and pause when you need to.

  4. Plan

Home-care coaching and recall timing. We book follow-up cleans before you leave when gums need closer care.

Honest answers

If something is holding you back

Common worries about gum treatment — especially when gums bleed, feel tender, or it has been years since a proper clean. Most of these are reasons to book, not to delay.

My gums bleed

That is often the first sign of gum disease. Professional cleaning removes the irritant. Waiting usually makes inflammation worse, not better.

It has been years

We start with an assessment and explain what we see. Heavier tartar may need more than one visit — we plan that openly rather than rush.

Will it hurt?

Sore gums can feel tender during cleaning. Tell us as we go — we can slow down, use numbing gel, or split treatment across visits.

Is this only for adults?

No. Children and teens with bleeding or puffy gums benefit from gum-focused care and coaching too — paced for their age.

Book gum treatment

Book online or call the clinic if your gums bleed, look inflamed, or feel like they are pulling back from your teeth. We assess first, then treat with a clear plan.
