Fissure sealants for new molars

Back teeth have deep grooves where food and plaque hide from even a careful brush. A fissure sealant is a thin protective coat we flow into those grooves when a new molar needs help staying clean. At Fresh Smile in Dandenong we also offer fluoride varnish when enamel needs strengthening. Both are explained first, applied with you in the room, and only when they suit your child's teeth.

What you are actually booking

Families usually book this visit when six-year or twelve-year molars have just arrived, or when a check up showed grooves that are hard to keep plaque-free. We may place fissure sealants, paint on fluoride varnish, or both. Nothing is added by default. You leave with plain after-care notes and a plan for the next recall.

Fissure sealants

A clear resin layer that fills the tiny pits on a molar's chewing surface so food and bacteria cannot settle in. We place them on back teeth with deep grooves, often when adult molars first erupt, and skip them when the surface is already easy to clean.

Fluoride varnish

A small amount painted onto enamel to help it resist acid between visits. Useful when decay risk is climbing, enamel looks chalky, or home brushing with fluoride toothpaste is still a work in progress. Quick, explained first, and not automatic for every child.

Fissure sealants explained for families in Dandenong

Molars at the back of the mouth do most of the chewing, and their surfaces are not flat. Tiny grooves and fissures trap crumbs and plaque where a child's brush cannot always reach. Sealants block those hiding spots. Fluoride varnish supports the enamel around them. At Fresh Smile both sit alongside daily brushing and regular check ups, never instead of them.

Why back teeth need extra help

Adult molars erupt with deep grooves on the biting surface. Even when your child brushes well, those valleys can stay damp and hold plaque. That is where decay often starts, long before a cavity shows on the side of the tooth.

A fissure sealant does not change how the tooth looks from the outside. It simply fills the groove so the chewing surface is smoother and easier to keep clean. We recommend sealants when grooves are deep and risk is real, not for every tooth by default.

Which teeth, and when

The first permanent molars usually arrive around six or seven, often before parents notice because they sit behind the baby teeth. Twelve-year molars come next. Those are the teeth we seal most often. Some children also benefit on second baby molars if grooves are deep and decay has started nearby.

Preschoolers rarely need sealants unless a back baby molar has a very deep groove and higher risk. We look at each tooth, not a birthday alone. If adult teeth are still months away, a check up and good home brushing may be enough for now.

What happens in the chair

There are no needles and no drilling for a standard sealant. We clean the groove, dry the tooth, paint on a thin bonding layer, then flow the sealant into the fissure and set it with a small light. Each molar takes a few minutes. Fluoride varnish, if used, is painted on in seconds at the end.

The tooth must stay dry for a short still moment, so we go at their pace. Parents stay in the room. If they wriggle, we pause. Sealing two molars today and two next month is fine. We would rather split the visit than turn prevention into a battle.

How long sealants last, and chalky enamel

Sealants can last several years with normal chewing, though hard grinding or crunching ice can wear them sooner. We inspect them at every recall and touch them up if a corner chips. A sealant that has worn thin is easy to repair.

Fluoride varnish helps when enamel is soft, chalky, or already showing early white marks. It is not a fix for grinding habits, but it can support weak enamel while you work on brushing and diet. Neither sealants nor varnish replace flossing where teeth touch or twice-daily brushing at the sink.

Prevention that fits real family life

Families across Dandenong book this visit when a school dental notice mentions new molars, when grooves looked stained at the last check, or when a sibling needed sealants and you want the same look for the next child. You receive a quote before we start. Eligible children may use CDBS for preventive care. Call 03 8909 9337 if you want CDBS eligibility checked before you book.

Fresh Smile is at Unit 1, 118-120 David Street, Dandenong VIC 3175. Tell us when you book if they gag easily, still use a dummy at night, or find the dental light uncomfortable. We keep visits short, explain each step in plain language, and send you home knowing exactly which teeth were sealed and when to come back.

The process

How a family gets this done

Most sealant visits at Fresh Smile take around twenty minutes. Here is the usual order from booking to leaving the car park, so children know what comes next and parents know where the still moments are.

  1. Book

Online or call 03 8909 9337. Mention new six-year or twelve-year molars, or ask for time after a check up in case sealants can be done the same day.

  2. Look first

We examine the grooves, confirm the tooth is healthy, and show you why a sealant would help. No treatment starts until you have heard the plan.

  3. Seal and set

Each groove is cleaned, dried, sealed, and cured with a light. Fluoride varnish goes on last if we agreed it would help.

  4. Head home

You get simple after-care: when to eat, when to brush, and when to return so we can check the sealants at recall.

Honest answers

If something is holding you back

Sealants sound technical until you see how quick they are. These are the questions Dandenong parents ask before booking, especially when molars are new and the child is still getting used to the chair.

Does my child actually need them?

Only if grooves are deep and hard to keep clean, or decay risk is already up. Shallow grooves and strong brushing may mean we watch and wait instead.

Will it hurt or need a needle?

No injection for a standard sealant. There may be a brief taste or the odd sensation of air drying the tooth. We stop if they need a breather.

They are only five, or still wriggly

Tell us when you book. We can seal one molar at a time, use the light only when they are ready, and keep fluoride for a calmer day if needed.

What about cost and CDBS?

You receive a quote before we begin. Many eligible children can use CDBS for preventive services. Call 03 8909 9337 if you want fees or CDBS talked through before you book.

Seal grooves while molars are new

The best time to protect a molar is soon after it erupts, before decay takes hold in a groove you cannot see from the mirror at home. Book when six-year or twelve-year teeth arrive, or after a check up flags deep fissures.

  • Block plaque in deep grooves

Sealants turn rough chewing surfaces into smoother ones so food and bacteria have fewer places to hide.

  • Support weak or chalky enamel

Fluoride varnish adds an extra layer of protection when enamel needs help between visits.

  • Checked at every recall

We look at sealants during regular visits and repair them early so protection does not quietly wear away.
